What to see in Moliets

Your stay in Moliets-et-Maâ is an opportunity to discover the Courant d’Huchet Nature Reserve, with the Moliets and La Prade ponds. A must for fishing enthusiasts, these two splendid bodies of water are perfect for lovely walks and offer an exceptionally well-preserved natural setting. Moliets Beach offers a superb view over the mouth of the Courant d’Huchet. Linking Lake Léon to the Atlantic Ocean, it flows through the heart of Moliets, and its nature reserve can be visited on foot or by boat, guided by a boatman. Once in the very heart of the site, the vegetation is so lush that the reserve is nicknamed the “Landes Amazon”. You’ll discover a succession of landscapes, from marshes to dunes and peat bogs. It’s a chance to admire rich biodiversity, with its many botanical varieties and numerous protected bird species. The village’s historic heart also reveals little gems such as the Saint-Laurent Chapel and the Notre-Dame Church. A must-see among the historical and cultural treasures in Moliets et Maâ: the Saint-Laurent Chapel. Also known as “Chapelle de Maâ,” it is located in the district of the same name north of the village. On Rue des Templiers, typical Landes houses stand alongside recently built modern structures. Erected in the 12th century by a Templar commandery of knights, the Saint-Laurent Chapel is nestled in the heart of a pine forest, in the hamlet of Tuc de la Citadelle. It lies on the coastal path that pilgrims followed to Santiago de Compostela and served to protect them. The chapel then fell into disuse before being restored in the 1990s. You can discover it for free on a guided tour every Monday morning at 11 AM in July-August. Exploring Moliets village is also an opportunity to discover the Notre-Dame church, as well as the fountains and washhouses, in the immediate vicinity of the town center. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, patron saint of Moliets, celebrated on August 15. Among other things, you can admire a Gothic portal restored in the 17th century, a wooden statue, an 18th-century altarpiece, and the 17th-century altar that was originally in the Saint-Laurent Chapel. Regarding fountains, discover the Saint Orens fountain, also called “Pourrut de Maâ” by locals, and the Nane spring (Saint Anne’s spring), known for treating skin problems. The Notre Dame fountain next to the church was, for its part, a place of pilgrimage.
