The surfers' Holy Grail is finding the perfect wave. To help you in your quest, here are 3 must-visit spots in Les Landes, whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or experienced surfer.
Catching a wave for the first time: the Courant d'Huchet in Moliets
It's your first time... it must be magical! And what a more beautiful setting than Moliets and the Courant d'Huchet, this small wild waterway that connects Lake Lรฉon to the Ocean in Moliets? If you stay at Campsite Le Saint Martin, you'll have a front-row seat. Our campsite offers direct access to Moliets beach! At its mouth into the ocean, surfing conditions are optimal thanks to the constantly shifting sandbanks that form beautiful waves breaking over several meters. Most beginners gather at the main beach. In summer, you'll meet locals there, as well as surfers of all nationalities. This further adds to the exotic charm of the place!
If you want to progress quickly, taking lessons is essential. Discover the Saint Martin campsite surf school in the Landes. We offer introductory surfing sessions, as well as lessons and courses for children and adults. You can also rent all the necessary equipment (wetsuits, boards, bodyboards, etc.).
Other spots suitable for beginners: La Centrale and La Sud in Messanges, Plage des Sablรจres in Vieux Boucau (10 km from the campsite)
Curious to see how the swell is in Les Landes: The Santocha spot in Capbreton
Capbreton's surf spots are among the best beach-breaks* in Les Landes, with tubular and fast waves all year round. Off the coast, the Gouf de Capbreton (a marine trench 4,000 meters deep) slows the swell and creates hollow and powerful waves that break left and right.
The Santocha spot (Savane beach) offers different wave sizes for intermediate or progressing surfers. The swells there are generous. If needed, you can easily fall back on the Prรฉvent spot. Moving away from Capbreton port, the waves are bigger and more powerful.
Other tested and approved spots: La Piste beach, also in Capbreton, and Les Estagnots in Seignosse (30 km from the campsite)
If the waves are under 2.5 meters, you stay home: La Graviรจre in Hossegor
Are you ready to take on the "big wave of Hossegor" and challenge yourself? Hossegor is the European capital of Surfing. Its waves grace the covers of surf magazines, and its beach break, considered the most beautiful on the planet, attracts the most experienced surfers.
An internationally renowned surf spot, La Graviรจre is a tubular, powerful, and technical shore break** that leaves no room for error, even for high-level surfers. The swell arrives from the open sea without slowing down and transforms into a hollow and powerful wave that peaks up to 5 meters high. It's no coincidence that the spot hosts the world's surfing elite during the Quiksilver Pro France, an annual stage of the World Surf Championship. As you can see, the La Graviรจre spot is reserved for very, very good surfers.
Other very challenging spots: La Nord and Les Culs Nus in Hossegor (25 km from the campsite)
*A beach-break (sand wave) is a wave that forms and breaks over a sandy bottom.
