In the South of Landes, just a stone’s throw from the ocean, the marine lake of Port d’Albret is an ideal place to spend a lovely day with family, cool off, relax, and have fun. Head to the pretty seaside resort of Vieux-Boucau, between sea and pine forest.
Swimming and a variety of water activities
Nestled between Soustons and Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains, just a stone’s throw from the ocean, the marine lake of Port d’Albret spans over 50 hectares. Two beaches are open for swimming: Sauvagine beach to the south (in Soustons) and La Pergola beach to the north (near downtown Vieux-Boucau). Children can swim there safely, as there are no breaking waves. The water is also shallower and warmer than the ocean.
For active relaxation enthusiasts, there are many activities suitable for all ages: catamaran lessons, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking… Sailing clubs, as well as beach games, are spread around the lake.
Miniature electric boat rides
On the shores of Albret marine lake, the miniature port of Soustons hosts a fleet of license-free mini electric boats, where everyone can take a seat aboard scaled-down models (trawler, steam boat, “Brittany Ferry” ferry boat, fire boat, military frigate…). And off you go for a 30-minute ride, which allows you to tour the island in the center of the lake.
DID YOU KNOW? Located 200 meters from the ocean, Port d’Albret marine lake is the only artificial marine lake in France. Fed by the ocean, the lake’s waters are renewed daily thanks to a dam that artificially reproduces the natural action of the tides. It was created in 1970 on the former bed of the Adour, diverted in the 16th century from Vieux Boucau to Bayonne.
Explore Port d’Albret Island
In the middle of the marine lake lies a small, wild, and preserved island, classified as a Natura 2000 zone. This small wooded islet, covered with maritime pines and cork oaks, is not “officially” open to the public to preserve the tranquility of the nesting birds that have made it their home. Nevertheless, an educational trail has been set up in the southern part to discover the local fauna and flora.
Walk or cycle around the lake
Starting from Vieux Boucau, a path goes around the lake (4 km), accessible on foot, by bike, scooter, or stroller. The walk allows you to discover the lake’s most secret and preserved spots, including the Moïsan canal, the old Soustons current, and the mouth of the marine lake. Allow 1h30 for the walk, a little more if you decide to go shopping or stop at one of the many bars and restaurants lining the lake. Departure from the car park opposite the Vieux Boucau arenas.
Fishing by the lake
Fishing enthusiasts will not be disappointed and will find what they’re looking for on the shores of Albret lake, on the pier, at the foot of the main dam in Vieux-Boucau, and along the canal that connects the lake to the ocean. You can fish for sea bass, mullet, and sea bream there. Each summer, the Atlantique Landes Récifs (ALR) association also organizes “shore fishing” trips around Port d’Albret marine lake.
