A charming seaside resort on the Les Landes coast, famous for its fishing and yachting port, its Fish Market, its promenade pier, and its incredible surf spots, Capbreton is located 30 km from our 5-star campsite in Les Landes. It's the destination we invite you to discover today!
Relaxation on the sand, surfing the waves, and a stroll on the Estacade
In the heart of the resort, Central Beach is very popular with families. Although very busy during the summer, the beach is large enough to lay down your towel without a struggle. Sheltered from the swell when the wind picks up, it is supervised during the summer season and has two beach clubs for your little ones.
Behind the casino is the Plage de l'Estacade (Estacade Beach), smaller in size, but just as lively. While swimming is only possible at low tide, it's enjoyable to settle on the sand and watch the sailboats pass along the port.
After swimming, take a stroll on the Estacade, an emblematic monument of the town where Capbreton locals, holidaymakers, and anglers gather. This long promenade pier, which extends almost two hundred meters into the sea, was built in 1858 by Emperor Napoleon III.
And if you're wondering where to surf in Capbreton? We'd recommend the Prévent Spot and Santosha if you're beginners. As for experienced surfers, they'll find new thrills at the "VVF" spot, renowned for its waves which, pushed by the Gouf de Capbreton, break as shorebreaks.
From Sunny Terraces to the Fish Market
After a stroll through the village's narrow streets, which house, among other things, two magnificent medieval corbelled and half-timbered houses, enjoy Capbreton's terraces for a drink, to savor a Landes platter, or to grab some Basque tapas. Unless you prefer seafood. And that's good news because Capbreton is both a pleasant marina with a thousand berths and a very active fishing port... and above all, unlike any other!
Here, fishermen are allowed to sell their catch directly on the quay at Capbreton Fish Market, at the foot of the harbor master's office. Without going through the fish auction, and thus directly from fisherman to consumer. Something you won't see anywhere else on the Atlantic coast, not even in Brittany.
But by the way! Why is Capbreton called Capbreton?
Why is there "Breton" in Capbreton, when the Landes port is several hundred nautical miles from the first Breton lighthouse? It would seem, according to all hypotheses, that Les Landes, and Capbreton in particular, established regular commercial relations with Brittany very early on. As early as the 14th century, sailors from Armorica traded their salted and dried fish for resin and pine tar used to waterproof wooden boat hulls. So, it's likely that as many Bretons as Landais were found in Capbreton... hence the possible origin of the name!
