A symbol of escape and freedom, wild camping could well be your next adventure in the Landes. But before you set off with your tent and optimism, know that wild camping is a practice strictly supervised and regulated by law. And sometimes, the fine can be hefty!
Where is Wild Camping Allowed in the Landes?
The short answer: it depends! In France, bivouacking and wild camping are not forbidden per se, but strictly regulated. And the Landes department is no exception.
To avoid a surprise encounter with a gendarme not necessarily as friendly as a squirrel, it is important to find out where wild camping is allowed and to respect certain rules. Beware, in case of non-compliance with the law, the fine can go up to 1,500 euros!
The practice of wild camping is governed by the Urban Planning Code. A 2015 decree sets the conditions under which it is permitted to pitch a tent outside developed areas: "Camping is freely practiced, outside the right-of-way of roads and public thoroughfares, with the agreement of the person who has the enjoyment of the land, subject, where applicable, to the owner's opposition."
> In summary: you must always ask for permission from the landowner.
Regarding restrictions and prohibitions, the Urban Planning Code reminds that "the practice of camping outside developed areas may be prohibited in certain zones when this practice is likely to harm [...] public safety or tranquility, natural or urban landscapes, the preservation of monumental perspectives, the conservation of natural environments, or the exercise of agricultural and forestry activities."
> In short: wild camping is prohibited in the Landes forest, on beaches, in listed sites, and in protected areas such as nature reserves.
Good Practices to Follow:
- Stay on trails and camp in identified bivouac spots.
- Never throw cigarette butts in nature or make campfires.
- Respect nature, do not leave any waste behind, and leave no trace.
- Do not feed, follow, or approach animals.
Advantages of Wild Camping
Why opt for this somewhat "wild" form of camping? First of all, because wild camping is synonymous with escape and freedom. No advance booking, no strict schedules to follow, just you, your tent, or your converted van. It's also, and above all, an opportunity to truly connect with nature. No noisy neighbors except for a few deer, hares, or foxes. You can choose your spot, as long as it's authorized, you're not too intrusive, you collect your waste, and you respect nature. In short, wild camping is adventure with a capital "A".
Disadvantages of Wild Camping
However, it's not all rosy. Wild camping in the Landes also has its drawbacks: unpredictable weather, insects and ants, the presence of wild animals, especially wild boars, and comfort (toilets, hot showers, drinking water points) often minimal.
