At the beach
When it gets very hot, the beach is the first thing that comes to mind. And ideally, a beach with a little breeze, just to feel the air caress your face. Close to the campsite, between Vielle-Saint-Girons and Seignosse, you will always find a spot by the sea to cool off, take a dip, or go surfing.
By a lake
Other very popular spots for vacationers looking to stay cool are the lakes and ponds of the Landes. And the least we can say is that they are numerous and very pleasant when the temperature skyrockets. Take your pick: Lake Cazaux-Sanguinet, Lake Biscarrosse-Parentis, Lake Aureilhan and Mimizan, Lake Léon, Lake Soustons, or the Port-d'Albret marine lake. People come here to lounge on the shaded banks, enjoy water sports, and the tranquility of the beaches nestled between the ocean and the forest. In short, true havens of coolness in the summer heat!
In the forest
It's well known that it's cooler in the forest. Head to the Landes de Gascogne forest, the largest forest in Western Europe! With an area of nearly a million hectares, 10% of which is dune forest along the coast, the Landes forest offers multiple opportunities for walks or bike rides. In the shade of the tall pines and cork oaks, the temperature can drop by 2 to 10 degrees, thanks to the vegetation! Perfect for spending a little time in the cool. In a church
For some, churches are havens of peace, conducive to prayer and meditation. For others, they are a good way to cool down. Just push open the doors of a church to immediately drop a few degrees. Choose between the beneficial coolness of Arthous Abbey, a former monastery founded in the 12th century by the order of Premonstratensian canons, or Saint-Jean de Sorde Abbey, a remarkable architectural complex bathed by the tumultuous waters of the Gave d'Oloron. Open every day during summer, from 10:30 AM to 1 PM and from 2 PM to 6 PM.
In a crypt
Still too hot? Go even lower, into the depths of a crypt, in the darkness and coolness of old stones! In Dax, the archaeological crypt is the last vestige of an ancient civil basilica, an antique monument that has now disappeared. It dates back to the 1st century and served as a public meeting place during the Gallo-Roman era. Justice was notably administered there. Guided tours every day in July and August, at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
